Regressive racial attitudes and bad jokes mar family sitcom.

This attempt at a culture-clash comedy about a friendly white guy who is a fish out of water in a predominantly black neighborhood, for now, is a miss.

A quality cast does its best, but can't salvage the cringe-worthy dialogue and paper-thin characterizations.

In this iteration, Calvin schools Dave on his assumptions, and Dave walks on eggshells. There's little debate and a lot of apologizing.

The ceiling of this house is closer to a one-story ranch than a spacious villa, making this Neighborhood unfit for new tenants.

And the whole neighborhood looks like a TV soundstage.

Despite the best efforts of the cast (especially Max Greenfield, who was so memorable on Fox's New Girl), this show fails to offer little more than its concept implies.

Despite the talent, we don't think The Neighborhood is going to rise above its gag-heavy writing and find the funny in what could have been some interesting characters.

If executed properly, The Neighborhood could hold up a powerful cultural mirror in the vein of Pryor and Norman Lear. But it's not quite there yet.

Comedy pilots, however, are notoriously messy, and this one may eventually find its groove. I am skeptical, however, about its ability to truly engage in meaningful social commentary about race when it has to play to a laugh track.

Perceptiveness alone will not carry a sitcom; it's got to have jokes. And The Neighboorhood relies far too much on the novelty of a black character spouting edgy lines that we're more accustomed to hearing from a white mouth.

CBS has taken major steps to make its new fall series considerably more diverse than last time. The Neighborhood hits that mark, but also marches to the same-old/same-old sitcom beats.

The question is what The Neighborhood will then become and if it's something less dated and more worthy of its four main stars who are all, in theory, about as good a sitcom quartet as you could assemble.
November 7, 2018
The Neighborhood is built around Greenfield and Cedric the Entertainer, a match made in sitcom heaven.

Credit The Neighborhood with trying to say something about modern racial politics.

Good-natured, a few funny lines, and Cedric stars as only Cedric can, The Neighborhood has potential.

Stripped down to its essentials, it's a familiar sort of comedy about a person who would like to be left alone and the person who won't leave him alone.
