There are funny ideas brought up throughout but they're never fully developed because they're dropped by the second half of the film.

A far cry from nostalgic Thanksgiving movies of the past like Hannah and Her Sisters and Home for the Holidays in happier times. It's being marketed as a comedy, but don't believe, it's a mad-as-hell microcosm for the Age of Anger.

Thanksgiving is brutal enough without adding fictionalized political devices. The Oath fails to recognize this and fails to deliver any notable laughs or insights into our nation's politics.

Unfortunately for us, what could have been a biting, dark political comedy is instead one of the worst films of the year.

Jokey white bro solidarity doesn't seem like the kind of understanding across difference that we need now.
October 16, 2018
There's a steady miscalibration to both its laughs and tension, the rhythms of the film seldom clicking into place...

Even while it asks us to recognize ourselves in a world not too distant from our own, The Oath seems to say that the worst part of a full-fledged American dystopia would be the ruined holiday dinners.

If you're for some reason wondering if a heated Facebook comment battle would make a good movie, writer-director Ike Barinholtz's new comedy, The Oath, is here to assure you that it wouldn't.

While The Oath does have occasional moments of intensity and wit, they are almost always undercut by Barinholtz's chronically weak storytelling.

Cranked to eleven at all times, The Oath is meant to mimic the frustrating and often fruitless task of seriously talking about politics in partisan times, but it's so basic and histrionic that it's more off putting than interesting.

The Oath appears to crave several things at once, all diametrically opposed.
October 20, 2018
The toothless satire might be less noticeable if the comedy wasn't so similarly gummy, but most of The Oath is rambling and uninspired, mostly amounting to one-note stereotypes shouting at each other.

October 12, 2018
The Oath lands in an unpleasant middle ground that is too close to reality to feel like escapism, and too antic to feel equipped at anything like incisiveness.

What's too bad is that The Oath loses control of its instrument just as the film's most riveting performance enters the picture.

Wants to have its pie and eat it too - lobbing political hand grenades and then running away, refusing to engage in the consequences the scenarios set up.

There oughta be a law against casting Tiffany Haddish in a movie that squanders her talents.

The Oath wants to interrogate belief, but... it's only thinking about events. Its biggest joke might be the idea that politics alone can start and stop human evil, or heal a family.

The script is remarkably lazy, relying far too much on stereotypes and high-decibel delivery rather than giving the characters anything interesting to say.
